How do a recover a writer document that has been saved as MS-DOS application

Yesterday I saved my business plan document in Writer Document and it saved a MS Dos Application. How can I recover my document? I need this document and spent hours on it. I do not want to have to recreate it. Please help and tell me why it saved as an MS-Dos Application when it is not even a save option? This needs to be fixed… Please help me!!!

Which operating system do you use and which LibreOffice version?

What do you mean with

saved a MS Dos Application. ?

tell me why it saved as an MS-Dos Application when it is not even a save option?

You are the only one who can tell it. None of us had access to your computer when you did it.

And what is the problem actually? What happens when you try to open the file.

Please instead of naming the result using terms that might be unfamiliar (like “it saved as a MS Dos Application”), try to explain what you see, like “when I use my file manager, and open the directory where my file is, I see it this way: its icon is like …, and when I move my mouse over it, a tooltip is shown with words “…”. When I double-click it, I get this:… Here is a screenshot.”

This way, you do as much as you can to allow others to imagine what they don’t see (what only you see now). Otherwise, you risk to only confuse those who might help. E.g., in your case, you used a description that made all wonder what it is about.

Thanks!

Diagnose

Most likely, you typed a name which ended with .com, or maybe .exe. These are valid filename extensions for MS-DOS applications (although if you are using Windows, the .exe extension should be taken as regular program file, not MS-DOS specific).

Ending a filename with a valid extension (period + 3 letters) when first saving it, will (at least sometimes) defeat the “automatic extension” when saving.

Your file manager uses the existing extension to categorize files, not actual content. The file content is likely a valid Writer file, not an MS-DOS program.

Solution

  • First, enable viewing of extensions to known file types. For some reason, most systems default to having the option hide extension for known file types enabled. Disable that option. It may have different name, depending on system platform.
  • Edit the file name. Replace/add three trailing letters after period by .odt.
  • Accept the change when warned that “this change may render your file unusable”.
