I am writing a non-fiction book. Each paragraph must be numbered: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc. How do I do this? thank you!
There are two ways of doing this, depending on the goal of numbering.
##Chapter-like numbering
Such a numbering is intended to be collected and displayed as a TOC. You just style your paragraphs as Heading n where n is the “level” of numbering: 1 for single number, 2 for 2 numbers, etc.
Of course, you’ll have to customise the style family because the default is fit for headings, not bulk text.
Modify style Heading for all common attributes (font face notably), eventually indents and spacing. Then tune individually every Heading n.
Tip: to make Heading n identical to Heading, push Standard
button in all tabs of style dialog.
By default again, chapter numbering is not enabled and you need to activate it in Tools
>Chapter Numbering
and define the properties of numbering.
##List-like numbering
Such a numbering associates a paragraph with a sequence counter. The set of all paragraphs pertaining to the same counter is called a list. A list needs a paragraph style (which defines the layout of the list item) and a list style (misnomer for the sequence counter properties).
You can use built-in paragraph style Numbering 1. By default, it is a “normal” paragraph style. You must go to its `Outline & Numbering" tab to associate it with a “list style” selected from the drop-down menu. Select one of the Numbering xxx. You can always customise this latter one if the result is not satisfying.
Use of lists is a bit different from headings. In headings, the numbering level is a consequence of the specific paragraph style used. In lists, the item level is set by the number of Tab
characters typed at head of the item: none for 1-number items, 1 for 2-number items, etc.
