When I try I just get minute partial text and dragging the frame to size causes the few characters there are to over-lap.

I have found my answer.
Special paste the copied material as RTF into the Impress slide; Ctrl+Shift+V, choose RTF
the Properties option to the right allows you to set the font and size of your choice very simply.
You can get there through the drop down Edit menu as I did initially, but it soon becomes a keyboard job.

Something sounds wrong, copying text from Writer into Impress should resize automatically. Overlap sounds very wrong. Is this text written into Writer or is it copied from elsewhere like a web page?
What version of LO and what operating system are you using? Cheers, Al
