How do I create (and use) a master document?

I have nearly 400 individual files I want to locate in a single, stylistically uniform document.

Edit your question to better explain your goal. Do you want to give a common look-and-feel appearance to your 400 files (in which case you need a template)? Do you want to combine your 400 files into a single document to print in a single operation?

How are your documents formatted? Are you familiar with styles? Master+subdocuments will fail if you are not consistent with styles (not only paragraph, but also characters and pages styles to names only the most important). If you direct format, don’t think about it.
