How do I insert a pdf image in writer

I am trying to write a scientific document using Libreoffice 4.4 on a Windows 7 machine. I need to insert high resolution graphics. I am trying to insert pdfs, but if I insert them as OLE objects, I end up with a large section of white space added to the right of the image.
If I go to Edit - Object - Edit, no white space is shown.

Note that I’m not trying too edit the pdfs. I’ve already made them in Inkscape. I’m just trying to put them into the document as graphics.

I have sort of worked out how to get rid of the white space, but I’ve now noticed that some of the elements of the pdf have been moved around, and extra characters added between words.

If you are generating the originals in Inkscape, why not export / save as an image format from Inkscape directly?

It is not possible to edit pdfs with writer. If you attempt to insert them they will be opened as images by Draw.

(I recall being able to select images within non-protected PDFs under Adobe-Windows & then save them; you would then be able to add them as ordinary images; however, neither Firefox, Chrome nor Okular would allow that just now under Debian 6.0)

There is a free Windows program - Nitro PDF Professional - with which you can edit PDF’s including extracting all images in the PDF.
