How Do I Print a Business-size Envelope in LibreOffice 3.6 Writer?

Dear Libre Office Geeks and Users—

my new copy of Libre Office 3.6 creates business size envelopes that have a two-inch top header by default, resulting in a 6" total document height when it comes time to print. The ‘Header’ command in the Insert menu does not remove the header or alter the total document size. As we all know, a #10 envelope should be slightly over 4" high.

So far the only way I am able to print such an ‘envelope’ is widen the envelope feed guides on my HP Laserjet 1022 printer and print the envelope with the flap opened. Since the flap is not a straight side the envelope does not feed straight and the address text is slanted a few degrees, so envelopes printed in this program are unsuitable for business or professional use.

In my experience with all OpenSource versions of Writer—OpenOffice, StarOffice, and now LibreOffice, printing a #10 business size envelope has been difficult or impossible. Problems with this function always drive me back to MicroSuck to get work done. I would be most grateful for instructions or work-arounds for printing envelopes … and regular 8.5" x 11" sheets too, for that matter!

Sincere thanks,

Glen

Okay guys, use ‘Format > Page’ to define the document height as just over 4". Then move the sender’s address into the header section of the envelope and leave the addressee in the lower part. This is clunky and will necessitate altering the default envelope template.

Hi @netdharma – still looking for an answer here?

Thanks

I moved to LibreOffice 4.0. Have not tried to print an envelope yet but the page preview looks promising, as if it has been user friendly-fied and/or fixed. I’ll report here as soon as I print it.

@netdharma – Thanks for the update! Please let us know how LO 4.0 works for you!

Not fixed in Mac OS X LO 4.1.2.3.

It’s possible that a bug has already been filed about this issue. For example:
fdo#51132 - After one success, PRINTING of #10 ENVELOPES failed to print properly, apparently due to incorrect formatting of the envelope document by the ‘Insert Envelope’ wizard

Here’s a list of bugs matching the search term “envelope”.

regular 8.5" x 11" sheets
Menu/Format/Page/Page - Page format - Format

I’m using LO 4.2.6.3 (with Windows 7 pro) because I want to use open source software. I even kicked a few bucks to Libre Office. But I get no respect when it comes to envelopes.

When it comes to envelopes, all I have ever wanted to do is print a damn #10 envelope. Believe it or not the program purports to recognize a #10 envelope. But in my experience with many iterations of LO and OO, it doesn’t. I had a #10 envelope worked out a few weeks ago. The addresses looked right when coming from my little LaserJet.

So today I attempted to create an envelope and up came some BS format that sure isn’t a #10 envelope. The first line of the return address was 1.5"/3cm from the top and inset .75"/22mm from the left edge (as we look at it). The addressee information was so low that it was almost off the envelope and it was indented about 5.25"/1325mm from the left edge of the envelope. I’ve been to this rodeo before; all one does is waste time and envelope stock trying to work out that which appears to be fairly straightforward. I assume this because a US letter size paper can easily be made a default document size.

When one needs control of almost everything in a document get Word Perfect or something other than LO or OO. 'Cause LO and OO lose their minds when it comes to something as ordinary as printing the most commonly used envelope in what has to be a large user base for these office suites. Guess I gotta pay them Canuks instead of a shrink.

A list of open bugs for “10”+“envelope” can be found here. Most are unconfirmed because it requires having an envelope feeder. Please help get them confirmed so they can be fixed.
