F1 is for volume control; insert button on keyboard makes no difference;
or just press the insert key it toggles the insert/overwrite modes
As separate issue, you can use the Function keys if you press Fn key at the same time. You can change the priority of the F keys. Instructions should be on your laptop manufacturers website. Normally, you have to go into BIOS and there well be a setting there. After that change, the F keys will work normally but to use volume you would need to press Fn+F1
