How do I use the scanner function?

I need to scan in some docs (legal) to set up a file and e-mail some of them. I cannot seem to locate the option to scan either to e-mail or into a file.

That is really a function of your scanner or MFP software. It is less complicated to simply use the the scanner software or hardware settings. I personally would always use image software or OCR software to process the scan before inserting the processed image/text.

If you insist, then in Writer there is an option to insert a scan, you can click, Insert > Media > Scan > Select source and choose which twain driver you want. The scanner driver software should appear and you should then follow your scanner instructions on how to use it. Cheers, Al
