I am creating a newsletter using writer and there seems to be no way to wrap text around an image. Despite tutorials giving instructions on how to make it happen, none of them work. The only thing that works is putting the image behind the text, which I don’t want.
That is not possible in Draw. Why not using Writer?
Okay, I switched to Writer because I’m still not getting the desired results. Text is behind image, can’t get it to wrap around. I would very much appreciate some help with this problem.
It is not possible in writer either.
Insert the image. In its context menu (=right click) use the item Wrap
and therein the item Contour
. If the default contour does not fit your needs, you can edit it. Use Edit contour
from the Wrap
menu. If you need help using that tool, please ask.
Contour works for wrap mode “Parallel”, “Optimal”, “Before” and “After” and in all anchor types but “as character”.
Shame on me, I forgot about “Contour” option
Regina, how is your answer affected by adding a caption to the image, which puts an additional frame around it? Then any Wrap applies to that outer frame, correct? (At that point, the context menu for the original image says “Wrap: No selection possible”.) But that outer frame does not have a Wrap->Contour choice in the context menu. So IAC what would Contour do if you just want a simple straight wrap?
A caption adds a frame and a frame has no edit contour. For a frame you can only use the simple wrap “parallel”, which is similar to a rectangular contour. A special shape wrap, e.g. circle, is not possible with a frame and a contour on the image would only affect texts inside the frame. But the combination of a caption with a circle wrap would be odd anyway. Therefore the simple “parallel” wrap on the frame might already meets your requirements. “parallel” is “Page Wrap” in context menu.
Just so. I’m sorry that I came upon this thread when having a simpler problem (simpler, in that the image was rectangular), and did not recognize that the OP’s problem was one of contour; I thought it was a simple wrap question - how “to wrap text around an image” of any kind, as I was experiencing such a problem. However, while I was working on it, Writer crashed, and after recovery the wrap problem went away, I wish I could be more specific about the resolution, but see reply to ajlittoz.
Could you describe exactly what you do and what you expect?
I made a test as follows.
I created a paragraph extending on several lines. I then inserted a 1cm x 0.5 cm frame (to simulate a picture) which I anchored to the paragraph, positioning it centered horizontally and vertically relative to paragraph text area, making sure that wrap options was set to Parallel.
Text wrapped around the rectangular frame. Said it otherwise, the frame punched a rectangular area which was removed from available text area.
I changed the anchor to page and character (not “As character”) and it also gives the wrap effect described above.
I emphasize word rectangular to insist that this works only with rectangles. You can achieve more complex wrap schemes with graphic objects inserted with Draw-like commands (or pasted Draw objects) right-clicking on it and choosing Optimal Page Wrap where the punched out area follows object border.

In your test, can you change paragraph styles (for example, from Heading to Body Text) in the wrap area (say, with text to left and image to right), so that you have two (or more) paragraph styles in the wrap area?
I can’t, and would like to understand why not: Paragraph styles, like paragraph text, should be independent of the image being wrapped.
What do you call wrap area?
I can set paragraph styles as I like, both in main flow (wrapping around the frame) and in the frame, independent from each other.
By wrap area I mean the area (or region, if you prefer) that wraps around the image – that is, the region that is to the left or right of the image. I find that all text in that region must be of the same Paragraph style. Any attempt to change the Paragraph style by Enter/Return forces the cursor below the image. Inserting a Manual Line Break does not do that, but also does not allow changing the Paragraph style.
Caution! Your image may be in a frame. Setting wrapping behaviour for the image applies only within the frame. Check wrapping properties for the frame, which is the only object known in your “wrap area”. If set to “Continuous”, you’ll get described behaviour.
You were right about being in a frame. I knew the image was in a frame, because it had a caption, but while I was working on it Writer crashed. After recovery, Navigator exposed that there were two frames around the image [surely something I did]. After deleting the previously-unknown frame, wrap behavior was OK. So thanks for your tip.
BTW, immediately after the recovery, the image in question was “Hidden” (per Navigator), but visible after deleting second frame.
If it is for Writer - multiple options of Wrapping is available for texts. Details described with examples:
