How do you remove the footnote numbers from the TOC?

I am creating a document that will have many footnotes, references to article where the information was found. I have made the numbers of the footnotes in the text to be superscript.

In the TOC, the number of the footnote is appearing next to the text, such as:

Jones 1

Smith 2

Yale 3

This is confusing to the reader. And to me. I need to have the numbers next to the text, but not in the TOC. Normally they do not appear in an index that way. (BTW, I expect that I may have more than one footnote for some pieces of information.

Yes, I’m using Styles for the TOC. Sure, I could put the fn number on the next line, but that looks stupid and destroys the lean and mean look I purpose for my document.

Maybe the question could be, how do I stop the style format before it gets to the end of the line?

You must be doing something wrong because footnotes are not shown in table of contents normally. When you say that you have ‘made the numbers of the footnotes in the text to be superscript’ you’re basically saying that you are not inserting footnotes from Insert → Footnotes/endnotes → Footnote. Insert footnotes as explained here and you’ll be set.

Oh yes I did use the Insert function. I did not “make” them superscript by hand formatting. That’s the way they came out in the Insert feature. I did everything as instructed.

I found a Bug Report where someone is complaining of the same thing. He calls it a “regression” from earlier versions, specifically 3.3 which didn’t have that problem. Apparently he was using 5.X which I had tried some time ago. It totally messed up a huge document I was creating so I got rid of it, back to 4.4.

PLEASE, can someone answer me? I am NOT doing anything “wrong”. I inserted them by the book, by the instructions. Yes, “footnotes are not shown in table of contents normally.” Of course! THAT is the problem. I just started a brand new document and still have the same problem.

I have started a list of organizations pertinent to this document. This is how it looks in the TOC:

First Organization !
Second Organization 2

I do NOT WANT it to appear that way. How do I FIX IT!?

Well, I can now get on with my work. Had to uninstall 4.X before installing 3.3 – now no footnote numbers in the TOC! YAY! There are other differences I’ll have to get used to and/or fix though. I can’t believe that no one else has had that problem and posted it on this forum, or that no one knows how to fix it.

You should try to install 5.1.5. Versions 3.3 is just to old.

Looks like I have to go back to 3.3, and now I have to find out which version of 3.3 doesn’t have the problem.

I’m using 5.1.5 and I tried this before posting my comment. It does exactly what you would expect.

I’m on 5.2.1.2, 64 bits, on Windows 10 and there’s no way I can reproduce that - I even have inserted a footnote in the middle of a heading and the TOC plain ignores it, i.e. it does exactly what it should do.
