How I write a long dash?

A long time ago with Microsoft word when I typed minus and a space , MS word change a the character for a long dash “–” instead “-”
Now that we are in UTF-8 age, I want write long dashes I don’t know how (without copy and paste= .

BTW, long dash is part of Windows cp1252 codepage which an extension of ISO8895-1 with a subset of new characters in 8 bits encoding and Microsoft normally call it ISO8895-15 when it was a Windows cp1252 , which take me about 10 years, to discover how I convert correctly Ms-word to OpenOffice, the adventure begins in the 90s
