how improve track changes performance?

I am using track changes while working on a 60-page document. There are numerous images.

Performance is sluggish. Are there ways to improve it? Specifically:

Should performance be significantly better if I save files as .odt rather than .docx? (My default is set to .docx in case I forget to convert a file before sending it to colleagues using MS.) I think the answer is probably yes and will start saving as .odt.

Would it make sense to not use track changes and just use compare documents at the end? How do the results in compare documents differ from using track changes? I can test this but might not notice important differences.

Indeed you should save as .odt and export as .docx only if needed, because LO use OpenDocument Format as its internal format and saving as docx needs each time a file format conversion.
For track changes, you could try to record changes but not show them. In LO 5.4 you have new buttons in the standard toolbar making easier using track changes.

Thank you, JBF. Even when I use .odt to work in track changes, performance is sluggish. Occasionally, Writer warns that using track changes without showing the changes can slow performance. I am therefore puzzled by why you suggest doing that.
I would appreciate an answer to my question about how the results of compare documents differ from track changes.

From what I have seen, not showing changes makes tracking changes even slower. As mentioned, LibreOffice occasionally displays a message saying that performance is better when changes are shown. So, this contradicts what JBF is saying. What am I missing?
I am still hoping that there might be a way to improve performance when track changes is turned on.
