How stop column spillover? I want cell contents to be contained within that column

If i knew the term for this I could probably find it in the settings!
Sometimes we need to describe or list something and its extended. Right now one column spills into the next and I need it to be contained. I just want to see the whatever words the space allows. How to do this?

What would be best I think is for the hidden contents of a cell to be visible as a popup when the mouse cursor is hovering over it. Is this possible in Calc? If not, is it possible in any spreadsheet? Mouse hovering popups can be irritating, to be sure, so they need to be able to be turned on and off. But they sure offer great benefits when used properly allowing an enormous amount of info to be quickly available yet hidden almost all the time.

The suggestion, by @Lupp, to use a line break grants a permanent view of the entire text. You can set the column width fixed and the line height then depends on the amount of text. With different font size you can then still vary.
Alternatively, you put only a topic text in the cell and write the full text in a comment, which you can hide if necessary and when you move the mouse over it, the comment becomes visible.

As far as I know there is no option to suppress text overflow in Calc without doubtable side-effects. Neither cell formatting nor general settings are available. You only have the option to indicate the overflow if it is inactive due to content in the adjacent cell.
So:

  • In some cases you may insert a hidden column with any irrelevant content (a space e.g.) on every row of your working area. A rather clean way.
  • You may set the otherwise oveflowing cells to automatic wrapping in the ‘Alignment’ tab of the formatting dialog. Will afflict later use of 'Optimal row height.
  • In the same place you can set the option ‘Shrink to fit cell size’. (May lead to tiny font size - in the extreme case to complete vanishing of the text!).
