Is there a quick way to resize a textbox to fit the contents of its text?
Hello,
select textbox - right click - select “Position and Size” and tick “Fit width to text” and “Fit height to text” (the latter is selected by default)
Is this in a different place on the Windows version? I can easily find the Position and Size tab but the Adapt section is missing completely. The sections I can see are Size, Anchor, Protect and Position. Also, all the other aspects of this box are completely different too. I thought it might be due to a new release but I cannot find any reference to it in the release note.
Can somebody help?
No - the option is on the same dialog in Windows Version of LibreOffice - sorry that I did not mention my version of LibreOffice:
Version: 6.2.5.2 (x64), Build ID: 1ec314fa52f458adc18c4f025c545a4e8b22c159
CPU threads: 4; OS: Windows 10.0; UI render: default; VCL: win; Locale: en-GB (de_DE);
UI-Language: en-US, Calc: threaded
May be you should start to mention the LibreOffice version you are using (I did not start with requesting this information since many user find than annoying, nerdy habit). Now it seems that - as usual - version plays a role in answering the question.
I’m sorry. I should have thought of that. I am using Version: 6.3.0.4 (x64) on Windows 10 Home 64 bit (Version 10.0, Build 17134)
I downloaded 6.2.5.2 on the same machine but the dialogue box is the same as 6.3. Just to be sure. I am creating the text box within a Writer document, within a paragraph of text. I am creating the box by clicking the textbox icon on the Form Controls toolbar. I drag to create the text box. I then right click within the text box in design mode and go to position and size. If I am doing something wrong along those steps please let me know.
@LeticiaB - Please see the tags - this question is tagged “impress” and therefore I’ve showed the dialog of “Impress” and not Writer. In Writer your only choice is to "Follow text flow*, but this only changes the height of the text box automatically.
When I make a text box within a paragraph I am able to right click on it and select “Position and Size” but the box that pops up does not give me the “Fit width to text” option. image description
I am using Version: 6.3.0.4 (x64) on Windows 10 Home 64 bit (Version 10.0, Build 17134). Thanks in advance for your help.!

To completely shrink-to-fit, you have to edit the Drawing Style (or create and use a new style) to set “Spacing to Borders” to zeroes. Click the textbox border to select the object – so the handles are visible – then rightclick->Edit Style, and in the “Text” tab, set Spacing to Borders to zeroes.
The “Fit width to text” function only expands the object to contain the text, it does not shrink. AFAIK you must manually shrink the object as much as possible (after setting the borders as above) using the mouse. See Text
