How to change the numbered list style so that numbers are right-aligned and list entries start in one column?

I am trying unsuccessfully to make numbered lists in a LibreOffice text document look so that the list-item numbers are right-aligned, and the list text entries are left-aligned. Currently by default the list looks like this, and I think its ugly:

What I tried to do is I click somewhere on the list numbering, right click, then choose “Edit Style…”, and from the “Outline & Numbering” tab where it says “Numbering style” select “List 1”, and click “Edit Style”, and there in the “Position” tab select level “1-10” and change “Numbering alignment” to “Right” (instead of “Left”) and “Numbering followed by:” to “Space” (instead of “Tab stop”). Then I click “OK”, and “OK” again, and nothing changes in the look of the list, its still the same as above.

Ideally I would like the default list style for this and all future documents to change the way I describe here.

• Numbering followed by: Tab Stop

If you want to be the default parameter, File▸Templates▸Save As Template and set as default.

You are almost there: just remember to set the “Aligned at” value to indicate where the right aligned numbers must end.

NOTES:

• the “Indent at” set the left indent of the numbered paragraph from line two onwards.
• Using a tabstop instead of plain space is useful if list items can take more than one line: just use the tabstop position as the same used on “indent at”.
• List styles offers “levels” and you can set individual levels to different alignments.
• You can set a template with the modified list style and set that template as your default one (File → Templates).
• AFAIK, you cannot change the “style” used by the list buttons on sidebar/toolbar, you need to use real styles to get consistent formatting.
