I want to divide the document I am writing into parts so that the first few pages are numbered with roman numerals such as the title pages of a book and then right after that the first page starts from page 1 with normal numbers for the main body of the text.
So I know about page break, page styles, and I already inserted a footer with page number etc… But how can it make it work? I inserted a page break where I want the break, and looked at page styles but I am not sure what to do exactly how to make it work can you describe me exactly how to do it?
When you divide a document into parts having different page appearance, associate this part to a page style.
Design your own page style or modify built-in ones (there is nothing reserved about them).
The page style definition contains all the attributes you need.
The key to the question is how to switch from one page style to another one. In a well-designed document, this can be done automatically through configuration of “boundary” paragraph styles. According to your question, you are relatively new to Writer, so this is the manual procedure.
Insert
>More Breaks
>Manual Break
where you want to switch to another page style. Don’t use Ctrl
+Enter
which merely adds a page break to the same page style*. The dialog for the manual page break allows you to choose the target page style and optionally to reset the page number to any value.

Thanks… I did it. And the critical step while inserting the manual break, which also should have been mentioned in the answer is that you need to check the “change page number” check box.
