How to insert a manual hyphen

Hi

I’m having some trouble with hyphenation in combination with the Dutch language pack. I’ve noticed several mistakes in hyphenation and for those words I’d like to add a manual hyphen so that they are hyphened correctly.

I found an explanation on how to do this in the help for LibreOffice 25.2
but I’m using LibreOffice 24.2.7.2. for Ubuntu. I was especially interested because it says “If you insert a manual hyphen in a word, the word is only hyphenated at the manual hyphen. No additional automatic hyphenation is applied for this word.” and that is exactly what I need.

I’ve tried anyway because I thought it might also apply to older versions but with no success. I don’t know if I’m simply doing something wrong or if it won’t work on my version.

Any suggestions?

To Manually Hyphenate Single Words

To quickly insert a hyphen, click in the word where you want to add the hyphen, and then press Ctrl+Hyphen(-).

If you insert a manual hyphen in a word, the word is only hyphenated at the manual hyphen. No additional automatic hyphenation is applied for this word. A word with a manual hyphen will be hyphenated without regard to the settings on the Text Flow tab page.

Ctrl+- should work in 24.2. I did find that occasionally it didn’t seem to enter anything. You can insert a soft hypen from Special Characters or enter U+AD and with the cursor immediately after it, press Alt+X

The key combination doesn’t work, neither does “insert soft hyphen” in the menu, but when I add a soft hyphen as a special character it does work.

Just for completeness, this is the help page for 24.2, that tells the same.

It would be nice, if you posted a screenshot of the problem, with formatting marks shown, and covering the whole Writer window (including status bar), to see if there is some easily detectable problem.

Hmm, so it’s the case of typing / inserting the hyphen problem.
