How to install updates without changing user settings

When I install LibreOffice updates I have to go back and redo all my settings. Do I simply backup the user folder and then paste it back after the updates? I do not want to undo any updates in that folder, but this is getting old to have to update everything each time. I really like this application and I am recommending this program to others as well. If I need to just backup and replace a specific folder or file that would be helpful as well. I am currently on Windows 10 but will be purchasing a Mac at the end of the year so getting instructions for both would be most helpful.

Note - a fix I found for LibreOffice crashing on W10:
I also found that uninstalling Java on my computer stopped LibreOffice from crashing so often. I researched and found that Java is not used that much anymore anyway. I turned off Java in the Settings of LibreOffice but that did not seem to help and uninstalling Java did.

Installing a new version to the unchanged location (in the file system, “over” the current one) and without any special setting concerning the user profile shouldn’t touch the settings it contains. The installation of additional languages or similar changes should also preserve everything else.
Always getting it this way myself for decades now (installing next to every version), what you report sounds very strange to me.
However, there is a way to install a version “in parallel” to a new location leaving the old one untouched “Developer versions” (not yet matured to an actual release) install this way by default. See Installing several versions of LibreOffice in parallel - The Document Foundation Wiki.

What are you doing in detail?

And: To make a backup of the user profile before installing a new version isn’t a bad idea anyway. And yes, you can replace a new one by the old one. It should work and give you your settings (most of), your templates, your macros … as they were. This should not be neceassary after a standard install, however.

No idea for what reason your LibreOffice is “crashing so often”: I do a lot of experiments including with user code, and I get some crashes. But as long as I just do everyday work there are none. That’s also on Win 10 in my case.

I download LibreOffice, R Click, Run as Administrator, then use the Typical install which gives me a new User Profile overwriting my settings I was using. This time, I copied the User folder this time before installing LibreOffice, and just put it back & all is well.

My first question is, should I not select Typical for installing or is there another way to Update? All I have is check for updates it downloads and it installs a fresh version. I do not want to have parallel versions of LibreOffice but thanks for the information. LibreOffice has always done this on my W10.

Second question, if downloading and installing fresh is the way LibreOffice works, then does the user folder ever get updated as I do not want to mess that up by replacing this with a copied version. This has always happened since I first install LibreOffice.

FYI Only:
Last, in Calc, when I am entering numbers into a cell or scrolling the side scroll bar down, the program would frequently crash with no error messages, and I would lose my work. Once I uninstalled Java, then this has not happened. I am thinking Java was not playing well on my computer even though it was the latest updates and W10 had the latest updates. Since I do not know anything else that might use Java, I will just not install Java again. I just thought I would mention this as I see other people are having problems with crashes. I have allowed Windows Defender etc to have access as stated on the website but I was still crashing. I do not run any other anti-virus software.

If there are any suggestions for my first two questions, that would be helpful otherwise I will wait a few days and just consider this closed.
