updated to LO7.3.2.2 and now all Writer headings text string have a left grey border
tried editing heading style, no change
deleted 7.3 and reinstalled 7.26, and headings back to normal

It could be that you have turned on Text Bounderies in the View>Text Bounderies
menu.
With the same selection you can turn it off again.
If this is not the case, it would be helpful, you upload here a reduced and anonymized file in which the problem occurs. Thank you very much!

Tools → Options → LibreOffice Writer → Formatting Aids

@PKG - that is exactly it. Had a grab to attach but couldn’t see where too.
I assume the default settings have been changed, as I had not disabled this on the clean install on Monterey.
For the Mac users that my recourse to PKG’s post, the path is:
LibreOffice > Preferences > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids
