I am pasting text content copied from outside sources into writer docs and the superscript numbers are being changed to full size numbers. This does not happen in Word. Are there some settings I can change somewhere that will keep superscript numbers in superscript form when I paste text into a writer odt document?
Have you tried with Menu/Edit/Paste special options?.
Yes I tried that. If I copy the text containing superscripts from a Word file into a LibreWriter document, the superscript numbers are retained as they should be, but if I copy the text from a web site and paste it to a librewriter file, the superscripts are changed to full size numbers. If I copy the content from a web site and paste it into a Word document, the superscripts are retained.
I just made a test on a XP machine using v4.3.5.2 and a homepage with a foot note. (about "service" - the service institut japan)
The superscript stayed as a superscripts in the text and the footnote which I also copied over.
Maybe an upgrade is a solution.
When you compared Writer with Word, did you copy and paste the same text in both cases? This also can have a influence to your results.
I am using v4.3.4.1.
In playing around with this I discovered the following.
Copying the browser rendering of an html file containing 3 and 82 by itself shows both the 3 and 2 as superscripts. Copying and pasting that browser rendering into a Word document shows the 3 and 2 as superscripts but pasting into LibreWriter shows the 3 as a superscript but the 2 as a full size number.
Copying the browser rendering of an html file containing the code 8< s u p >3< / s u p > and 8< s u p class=“something” >2< / s u p >by itself shows both the 3 and 2 as superscripts. I have discovered that the failure of Writer to render superscript correctly only applies to certain types of html coded web pages:those with classes specified inside the sup tags.
If a class is specified in the html code inside the sup tags, the characters specified as superscript by the sup tag on the web page will not be rendered as superscript when copied from the web page and pasted into a librewriter document. They will be rendered as superscript when pasted into a Word document.
If the browser page is saved as a txt file and the txt file is then opened with notepad, the superscript numbers will be indicated as such with a ^ symbol preceding the number.
The presence of the class specification inside the sup tags has no affect on the superscript rendering when pasted into Word or opened as a saved txt file in notepad, but it does prevent the superscript rendering when pasted into LibreWriter. I am having to paste into Word first and then copy from the Word document and paste into Writer to get the correct superscript rendering.
I consider this to be a bug in Version: 4.3.4.1 of LibreOffice Writer.
I have since discovered that copied text from some web pages will not render superscripts or subscripts correctly in either Word or Writer… If position location class styling is used to position the sub and sup characters, it appears you cannot copy and paste and get correct sub and sup rendering. Printing the web page to pdf and converting the pdf to Word and then opening the Word file and saving as odt was the only way I could keep correct sub and sup positioning in Writer.
