How to set default behavior when importing styles from a file or template

Hi,

I often need to import template styles into an existing document. When I do this after a restart, I often forget to click all of the boxes in the “import styles” template. Since I do it so often, it really annoys me that my selections aren’t remembered from one session to the next.

Is there a way to make Writer check all the boxes by default, even after a restart? I know that once I’ve restarted the boxes remain active until I quit. But it happens to me often enough that it’s really annoying.

Thanks,

L

IMHO, as far as I can see, there is unfortunately no option.

Thanks, that was my first thought but I thought I’d check first.

Change a bit your workflow.

It seems to me that what you call a “template” is not the same as the technical templates Writer (and more generally LO) manages. I understand from your description you have a reference document with .odt extension you use as a basis for others. It exists only for the purpose of providing your custom styles.

Writer can manage a dedicated type of document called template with extension .ott. These templates are created from ordinary documents by File>Templates>Save as Template.

You have two ways to use such a template:

  • basic
Double-click on the .ott icon to create a new Untitled.odt document. Note that Writer changes the filename and extension to prevent ersure of the template.

  • integrated into LO
Your template can be made known to LO by File>Templates>Manage Templates and Import button. I recommend you make first a backup copy of the template because LO will move it to one of its internal directories. When you want to modify your template later, you might have same difficulty to retrieve it.
You can register as many templates as you want.
Create a new document with File>New>Templates and select the desired templates.

When you work mainly with a single template, you may find tedious to go through a menu and a dialog to always select the same template. Then, with File>Templates>Manage Templates, make your preferred template the default one. After this, File>New>|Text Document or Ctrl+N is all you have to do to reference your template.

Note: if you’re under Windows, don’t create a new document from the file manager as it will not reference your custom template. Always create documents from inside Writer.

Hi,

I am using a template (ott). But I often receive documents that already have the content and I want to update the formatting. That’s when I import styles from a template. Otherwise I create new documents based on my templates.

Thanks,

L

Then if you are on a “long-term” editing process with alternation between contributors, you might base the document on your template with extension TemplateChanger. When the document comes back after a round trip and you have modified your styles, you’ll be asked if you want to apply changes when you open the document.
