I can't open files on a samba network share from Ubuntu

I’ve connected the file manager on Ubuntu 24.04 to a samba share. I can open all the files normally, except for LibreOffice files.

When I try to open any LibreOffice file I get a message that “this file has been locked by another user.” When I click more details, it says the document name and then “User Name: Unknown User”. I did show hidden files and there is no lock file.

Another thing I noticed is if I open LibreOffice, like Writer, and I try to save the file by browsing to the network folder, I get an error when I click on the network folder and can’t browse or select it. I get an error “The folder contents could not be displayed. Operation not supported”.

I don’t have any issues doing any of these things from Windows 10.

I’m using LibreOffice

I’m using gnome and added the samba shares through the “Other Locations” in the Files manager.

The server is a TrueNAS on my local network, exposing the folders as a Samba share.

It looks like the issue might be related to the way the gnome file manager mounts samba shares. When I connect using cifs from the commandline I was able to get better results.

Does anyone understand why that might be the case? Is that a ubuntu or gnome bug? Am I misconfiguring something?

The biggest difference I see between the two mounting methods is that when it’s mounted through gnome and I right click on a folder or file the permissions are none or unknown. When I mount it manually I can see the actual permissions.

When I read the permissions through the commandline they look fine both ways though.

Thank you to everyone who suggested solutions. It helped me realized that the problem wasn’t necessarily with LibreOffice, but maybe something with Gnome or Ubuntu.

When I mounted the network share using fstab following the instructions here: How to mount CIFS shares permanently | Ubuntu, I was able to use LibreOffice on those files no-problem.

At this point I think it makes sense to track down the mounting issues in those communities.

Thank you!
