Image locations scrambled

I used Writer to put together a novel. I then added an image at the end of each chapter by adding two pages and Insert → Image. The images were too large, so I used the handles to resize and center them.

After adding images to the 20 chapters I went back and saw that the locations of the images had changed, as now many of them appear to have located themselves within random places within a chapter.

Perhaps I am doing something wrong? I can go back and do this all over again, but my concern is that the same thing will happen, so if anyone can explain to me what happened, and how I can get the images to stay where I placed them then that would be very helpful.

Thanks

First explain how you anchored and positioned the images.

Quite unusual: pages are automatically allocated by Writer when needed. Which anchor mode have you chosen? To page? This is the worst choice.

How did you position the images? With the mouse? You created direct formatting and frames (the container for images) are extremely sensitive to direct formatting and become unstable.

When dealing with images, it is highly recommended to prepare them outside Writer (scale, size, dot density, crop, …) so that Writer has nothing to do and uses them “as is”.

Don’t forget to mention OS name, exact LO version and save format.

For best analysis and advice, attach a reduced version of your document (end of chapter + pages you added and first page of next chapter, i.e. a total of 4 pages?).

I do not know what anchor mode was used - I just placed my cursor on the page, and did Insert → Image.

I just redid all of the images. When I right-click (Windows 11) on them, nothing is marked when I hover over Anchor. Wrap is Optimal. I am using LibreOffice Version 25.2.5.2. Is there anything I should change that will ensure that the images will stay put?

I can do resizing on images, but don’t know what resolution/pixel count they should be. I guess I can experiment to see what different pixel sizes look like on the page.

Generally speaking, if the document is intended for print then images should be 300 dpi.

It is best to size and set resolution in a dedicated image editor although you can set width, height and resolution in Writer by clicking an image and selecting Compress.

If no dot is visible against the anchor points then Anchor to Page was used which is not normally available in 25.2, although maybe a carry over setting from an older installation.

Anchor to Page anchors it to the count of page, that is, if you Anchor to page on the 100th page and then then you add two pages before that page the image will still be anchored to the 100th page but you want it anchored to the 102nd page now.

The default for Writer is Anchor to Character so you could right click each image and choose that anchor method.

To set the default to Anchor to Character, click Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids and select Anchor To Character. OK

Okay, Anchor to Page must have happened (although I do not see it as an option), as I did some formatting and the images just seemed to move around. I have redone all of the images with Anchor to Character and they appear to be staying in place. I also used Photoshop to resize all images at a height of 550px, which is about the size that looks okay on the page.

So just 4.7 cm high at 300 dpi?

367x550px at 72 dpi makes for about 5x7.5"

72 DPI won’t print well if you are intending it for print. Most screens are around 96 to 120 pixels per inch so the images might look a bit blurry on screen.

I would not go below 150 DPI if file size allows as that is adequate to print on a home printer and looks clear on most screens

It will be perfect for my purposes.
