Without fail, every single time I try to do anything with a movie (mp4) regardless of whether this movie is less than 1 megabyte, Impress crashes. WITHOUT FAIL. It becomes stuck and I am forced to Force Quit.

I would try to use some video converter and convert your video to another format. Help page about media support could help you figure out a format that will work. I guess you have GStreamer installed? Is your operating system updated? This is a very complicated topic. Maybe you’re willing to consider to upgrade to 5.4.5 and test? Feel free to report back.
