In trying to set up curly double quotes for a publication ms, I tried to do it via auto correct, as recommended. this did not work.

Then I set special characters, and when I hit the curly quote character setting I get a circle with a diagonal, looking like a slotted screw head. Any ideas? the ms is 360 pages long, with lots of dialogue.
