In Writer, how to give image soft edges

Using Writer 24.2.4.2 in windows 11, how can i give an image soft edges (not shadow) so it fads-out at edge rather than sharp-edge? I just spent almost an hour searching online and reading the manuals, but no luck. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Heh, I seem to remember implementing that for version 7.0

LO (in its Writer, Draw or Impress component) can’t do that. Writer is a text processing application, not a picture manipulation one. It can position images very accurately; that’s all.

EDIT: Prepare your image in Draw (thanks to @mikekaganski who implemented the function), then paste into Writer. /EDIT

Alternatively, use an external ad-hoc tool: GIMP (Foss), Photoshop (commercial), … Also, crop, scale, rotate, … your image before inserting it into Writer. The less you require from Writer, the better. Ideally, your image should be used “as is” without any operation in Writer (even scaling).

Thank you ajlittoz,
I tried using GIMP, but though i followed the instructions, selected my image, applying feathering doesn’t change the image. I read their manual, but i obviously missed something. Any suggestions?

PS: I did more research and found LunaPic (LunaPic | Free Online Photo Editor - Edit, Adjust & Create) online which softened the edges just fine, so disregard previous request – and THANKS for your help!

Typically, soft edges are created using a layer mask. You can do the same in Writer by stacking a suitable png with transparency over the top of an image.

The png should be created in a graphics program and different shapes can be created, such as starburst, etc.
Here is one I just made laid over the top of a jpeg. I cannot upload the png by itself to this site as it gets converted to jpg for some reason.
ImageWithSoftEdgePngOverThe Top.odt (537.0 KB)

Obviously, it reduces file size to do the overlay in a graphics programme like GIMP and save the whole as JPG
