Indenting long list of index numbering

Index entries with many associated page numbers all align making the index hard to read. I would like to indent the numbering to make the main entry easier to read, but I do not want them to align with second entry, I hope that makes sense.

I would like something more like this
Osage Mission, 21 23,27, (etc).
(space) 50, 51 52, 53, 54, 55

If there was a second entry, I would like something like:
Osage Mission, 21 23,27, (etc).
(space) 50, 51 52, 53, 54, 55
(more space ) location, 33.34, 35

EDITED: (space) was added because post was not adding the indent

Thanks for any help

Adjust the applied paragraph style: use some (x) indent value for the paragraph, and use -x value for the first line of the paragraph in the style settings.

Thanks for the reply. I am slowly learning all of the ins and outs of LO (and pulling my hair out at the same time!)
Where is this change made? In the the “Edit Index” section?

Adjust the applied Paragraph Style. Use the Stylist, choose to modify the applied one.

Index entries are formatted according to Index 1 paragraph style for first-level entries. Index 2 and Index 3 are for other levels.

For better look, I’d suggest you set right alignment in the paragraph style so that page numbers for lines 2+ are “naturally” flushed right, thus creating a wider indent at left.

Tune Indents Before text in Index 2 & 3 to clearly show they are secondary and tertiary entries, depending on the preceding shallower entry.

Here are my settings, when I add the Tab Stop and then under the # tab when I align right my numbers run outside the margins using two columns, and lose number altogether on index 2

Align right should not be set in the Structure line of the Entries tab. This attribute is set in Index n paragraph style.

Your Structure line should be left as built-in: ET# otherwise the trick with right-alignment will not work. The important point here is the tab insertion with T which “decouples” the entry from the page numbers. Thus the entry is left-aligned while page numbers are right-aligned.

You may keep the leading line with dots on level 1 and suppress the dots on higher levels.

The overflow when in multi-column context is a lurking bug present for many releases (you didn’t mention your LO version). It seems to have improved in 7.3.6.2 but still occurs randomly.

Temporary fix is to untick the Align right checkbox for T and explicitly set the distance (Tab stop position).

I updated and the tab right now works!! It looks a lot better.Where I am setting now is in trying to get the indenting of Lines 2+ correct. Also, as on the Independence entry, some entries do not go flush to the right

Then you didn’t configure adequately Index n. I know it is quite tricky because you must play smart with indents Before text and First line. Have set alignment Right in index n paragraph styles?

I think I am getting it now. I was in the wrong location trying to make setting changes. It is getting better, probaly still needs some tweking

You can improve the “Thayer, Kansas” line and the like by setting indent Before text to some value and simultaneously First line indent to the negative of this value. However there is a catch. Since the setting is valid for all entries at same level, take care to set the indent to a value not greater than the smallest key width. When first line indent is negative, the paragraph left limit (indent Before text) defines an implicit tab stop. If the indent is too large, the tab after the key will stop there instead of the right limit.
