only shows page number page count etc but not the field names

Sorry but this question makes no sense at all. Please provide much more information. Is this a button on a database form? Don’t know of any “datafield” populating a button. What OS? LO version? Database being used? What does page number/count have to do with Base? Or is this incorrectly tagged?

It appears to me you are trying to add controls to a form. This is not done with the menu item Insert.
