When using the Math program, I want to insert a modulus sign “|” for
a complex number like |z| in a equation.
How can I do this? I tried several things without success.

Try abs{z}, it is in the right click menu of the input bar under functions → the very first entry.

Or do you mean just the vertical bar? Did you tried "|"?
