I can no longer use drag and drop to insert photos into documents. Whether doing this or using the Insert menu, I get a frame on the target page with a graphic icon in the top left corner and I can’t embed the image. There is no problem with inserting text from other documents using either method. What am I missing please?

I guess you recently upgraded LO under Windows. Frequently, this wipes out your user profile (or part of it) causing loss of customisation.
I suggest you look at View>Images & Charts to check if this is ticked. You can also go to Tools>Options, LibreOffice Writer>View to tick Display Images & Objects.
