Inserting text into existing text

When I attempt to insert text into a document, it ALWAYS overwrites the existing text. How can I correct this?

Press the Insert or Ins key (in a desktop keyboard it is located above the Del key).
Or, click in the Overwrite field in the middle of the status bar.
