Is anyone annoyed by the start up latency?

Every time I launch LibreCalc my machine checks for an update. I routinely close my applications when done with a piece of work and expect them to open right away when I return. The “Checking for Updates” takes a long time. I might restart LIbreCalc 10 times during the course of a day. Then it’s, “toe tap”, “toe tap”,. When there is no update, the app starts very quickly, so, whatever the mechanism is for update checking and inserting is, is slowing down the show.

One would think an update check once or twice a day would suffice for 99.99% of the users. The design team could design a configuration manager which permits the user to specify “Check for update frequency”. Then, everyone that needs that latest now still gets their wish, and those, such as I, who are happy with “Once daily” would be overjoyed.

Thoughts anyone? Or valid reasons for not doing such a thing?

Therefore, you should submit feature requests directly in Bugzilla as Enhancements.

If it is annoying then click Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Online Update, untick Enable automatic update and choose a frequency to check for updates, e.g. once a month. Or you can untick the checking for updates entirely.

Pierre,

Thanks for correctly spanking the newb. I will make the appropriate adjustments to the query.

One additional hint:
You seems to use this ask-site by email. In your case you have published your mail-address to the whole internet. If this is not intended, I suggest to edit your post (possible, if you log into the website ask.libreoffice.org).

PS: Also it is better to use comments than “answer”, as your post is not really an answer to your question.

Your Question “Is anyone annoyed…?” is an easy one, as YOU are obviously. Therfore: Yes, there is someone.

I don’t use the feature, but for other reasons. But you can choose to switch it off. LibreOffice existed for years without this, so this is still possible.
.
Some users have requested automated updates for long time. And typically with all features there is the group, wich reacts with “how to switch this off again?” or “modify according to my ideas”. I already posted the link to bugzilla above.
.
Maybe using “quick start” could help, but I haven’t tried…
