Is it possible to configure the default settings for menus?

Every time I paste a picture to a Writer document, I have to switch off wraparound, since the default behaviour for a pasted picture is wraparound. Also I would like to pre-set margins for pasted graphics to 3 mm (all directions, just in case I would like to have a picture side by side with accompanying text. It does not other LibreOffice, if margins are defined but a picture is without wraparound).

The other thing that always worries me that the aspect ratio for a graphic is not fixed by default. I also would like to have it fixed by default after double clicking on a picture in order to adapt its size.

If this is not accessible through one of LibreOffice’s menus: Where are all the defaults set? Is it dee in the source code of all the functions dealing with those dialogues or is it one general profile or settings file or is it some resource defining those menus.

The default settings you’re requesting can be defined through styles. This is a fundamental concept for a “professional” usage of LibreOffice. You are encouraged to read the relevant chapter(s) in the Writer guide (pdf version but others are available in the documentation page.

Here is how to pre-set your preferences:

  • make the Styles & formatting sidebar visible if not already there (F11),
  • click on the middle tool icon (frame styles),
  • right click on the style called Pictures or Images (depends on UI language) and select Modify...,
  • change any setting to fit your needs,
  • click OK to save.

Notes:

Pay special attention to the Type tab as it defines the “location” properties of the frame: character within the current paragraph, anchored to the paragraph or anchored to the page.

Margins and wrap-around properties are in the Text adaptation tab.

and the procedure:

  • Where you want to insert a picture, insert a frame instead with menu InsertFrame...
  • Click OK (the new frame will have standard style Frame.
  • While it is selected, double click on Pictures style in the sidebar; the frame changes to your personal settings.
  • Set the cursor inside the frame and paste your picture.

If you have many pictures, you’ll have to play with the settings to find the optimal parameter values. You can also create a few different styles (the fewer the better) to cope with conflicting situations.

If you are satisfied with the suggestion, don’t forget to tick the answer and close the question.

Thank you for the hint. In the German version, the style to be selected is “Grafik”. Wrap around and margins can be set as described by you, however the option to fix aspect ratio is greyed out.

Where shall I submit the suggestion not to grey pout this choice in this situation?

I could not reproduce the disabled (=greyed out) state of the aspect ratio, but I know it is very sensitive to circumstances as I have already experienced it. Also, you can set the aspect ratio both in the frame and the picture format dialogs for different characteristics and results.

Please, tick the answer if you consider it is satisfactory.
