I am using a MacBook Pro with OS 10.12.6 and Word 12.3.6 / Word 2008 for Mac.

Is this even a LibreOffice question? Why are you giving your MS Word version? In any case, open the .lwp file in LibreOffice, then File > Save As and choose .doc.
