Hi! Long time user, really never take time to ask too much. I see in Writer a nice kind-of DTP. I use Scribus and Serif applications for my work, but i like Writer possibilities.
I was wondering myself if there is some way to allow Writer work beyond page boundaries, using the workspace around the page as temporary place where put images, text boxes, etc, that you will insert in text. Also be able to put a larger image without the need to crop it, just using the natural limits of the page size.
Just wondering myself… Thanks any comment you can made me.
Short answer; no.
You are probably thinking of the procedure of putting future elements aside the target area (usually a page) to be able to access them quickly.
Writer is not a DTP program, though you can use it as such for simple tasks. The main difference is page handling.
DTP programs allocate pages first and you must manually chain them to offer an overflow possibility.
Writer manages a text flow and pages are automatically allocated (or removed) to accommodate this text flow. In addition, page area is a hard limit to what you can insert. It is obvious that text can’t be laid out outside its bounding rectangle (defined by its horizontal indents – vertical extent is managed by text flow). Indents are guarded in order to not overflow page size. You can however cheat a bit by “exaggerating” first line indent but it impact only the first line, so it is of little use. Frames cannot be positioned outside the page and its size cannot be larger than page width (unless you tweak it hard).
Hi! Thanks for comment. Yes i know what you say. But would be great to be able to use that workspace at least for images and additional elements that are planned to be inserted.
Regarding images, you could add them to the Gallery (in the sidepane).
Maybe it is just easier to open a new blank document and use that as a scratch pad.

Generally with images, I save them in a folder at correct resolution and size and then drag them in as needed.

Text boxes are drawing objects and not particularly useful in Writer; better to use frames which can contain just about anything a page can contain, e.g. fields, styled text, images, etc. They can also be linked so text can flow from one frame to another
