Is there a doc extension that is halfway between docx and md in terms of complexity?

docx files have lots of complex formatting information, and different apps will interpret it subtly differently and that can screw up the composition. Also docx is focused on paginated documentation by default in most programs, and I prefer to write freely without page breaks.

I like using markdown files for my notes, but including images means having a second file and or folder. Markdown files are just focused on content, so different apps interpreting it differently isn’t really an issue. And pagination doesn’t enter into it at all.

Is there a file format that is halfway between these two? I would like to be able to write simple content focused format agnostic notes, but then including an image becomes a huge hassle.

Use the HTML view of the Writer.

Do you mean the web view?

FocusWriter (file format is Open Document Text)

docx is four characters; md is two. Use ODT!

“Do you mean the web view?”

Yes. The correct name is the menu item is View - Web.

It doesn’t appear to allow for inserting images. Also this issue isn’t so much the client for reading docs as it is the doc file format. I want something, like .md that I can open in a plain text reader. But I guess that’s kind of a silly request to then also want something that includes embedded images.

Writing stuff in docx/odt in libreoffice web view seems like it might be the right track for things. I really like the simplicity of the pageless format in Google Docs but I don’t want to be using google docs, I don’t like having my files locked away in a file format that can’t be read by any other program.

It is a contradiction. But as said earlier: use .html as it can be edited in a text-editor and can show images (and links). Modern html can be styled with external css.

I would not recommend using Writer as a html-editor, but for simple jobs it may be sufficient. I used phase5, BlueGriffon, Atom and Notepad++ to work directly on html-files…

a .html file wouldn’t have the images embedded though, it would still be referencing them externally, just like md.

Also I don’t think that web view requires using html extension, does it?

Web View does not require it to be saved as HTML, I can look at and edit .odt files using Web View.
Of course an .odt file is just a zipped folder containing various files including mainly xml, with images linked from the Pictures folder so similar to html in that respect but easy for the user as it appears as a single file.
If you did use Web View to create text with images you might be best to change the default anchor to As character in (Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids) and put images in their own paragraph because otherwise it could look very different in Normal view or print

Note that there is a data URI syntax like

<img src="data:image/jpeg;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABkAAAAZCAYAAADE6YVjAAAAGXRFWHRTb2Z0d2FyZQBBZG9iZSBJbWFnZVJlYWR5ccllPAAAAyJpVFh0WE1MOmNvbS5hZG9iZS54bXAAAAAAADw/eHBhY2tldCBiZWdpbj0i77u/IiBpZD0iVzVNME1wQ2VoaUh6cmVTek5UY3prYzlkIj8+IDx4OnhtcG1ldGEgeG1sbnM6eD0iYWRvYmU6bnM6bWV0YS8iIHg6eG1wdGs9IkFkb2JlIFhNUCBDb3JlIDUuMy1jMDExIDY2LjE0NTY2MSwgMjAxMi8wMi8wNi0xNDo1NjoyNyAgICAgICAgIj4gPHJkZjpSREYgeG1sbnM6cmRmPSJodHRwOi8vd3d3LnczLm9yZy8xOTk5LzAyLzIyLXJkZi1zeW50YXgtbnMjIj4gPHJkZjpEZXNjcmlwdGlvbiByZGY6YWJvdXQ9IiIgeG1sbnM6eG1wPSJodHRwOi8vbnMuYWRvYmUuY29tL3hhcC8xLjAvIiB4bWxuczp4bXBNTT0iaHR0cDovL25zLmFkb2JlLmNvbS94YXAvMS4wL21tLyIgeG1sbnM6c3RSZWY9Imh0dHA6Ly9ucy5hZG9iZS5jb20veGFwLzEuMC9zVHlwZS9SZXNvdXJjZVJlZiMiIHhtcDpDcmVhdG9yVG9vbD0iQWRvYmUgUGhvdG9zaG9wIENTNiAoV2luZG93cykiIHhtcE1NOkluc3RhbmNlSUQ9InhtcC5paWQ6MEVBMTczNDg3QzA5MTFFNjk3ODM5NjQyRjE2RjA3QTkiIHhtcE1NOkRvY3VtZW50SUQ9InhtcC5kaWQ6MEVBMTczNDk3QzA5MTFFNjk3ODM5NjQyRjE2RjA3QTkiPiA8eG1wTU06RGVyaXZlZEZyb20gc3RSZWY6aW5zdGFuY2VJRD0ieG1wLmlpZDowRUExNzM0NjdDMDkxMUU2OTc4Mzk2NDJGMTZGMDdBOSIgc3RSZWY6ZG9jdW1lbnRJRD0ieG1wLmRpZDowRUExNzM0NzdDMDkxMUU2OTc4Mzk2NDJGMTZGMDdBOSIvPiA8L3JkZjpEZXNjcmlwdGlvbj4gPC9yZGY6UkRGPiA8L3g6eG1wbWV0YT4gPD94cGFja2V0IGVuZD0iciI/PjjUmssAAAGASURBVHjatJaxTsMwEIbpIzDA6FaMMPYJkDKzVYU+QFeEGPIKfYU8AETkCYI6wANkZQwIKRNDB1hA0Jrf0rk6WXZ8BvWkb4kv99vn89kDrfVexBSYgVNwDA7AN+jAK3gEd+AlGMGIBFDgFvzouK3JV/lihQTOwLtOtw9wIRG5pJn91Tbgqk9kSk7GViADrTD4HCyZ0NQnomi51sb0fUyCMQEbp2WpU67IjfNjwcYyoUDhjJVcZBjYBy40j4wXgaobWoe8Z6Y80CJBwFpunepIzt2AUgFjtXXshNXjVmMh+K+zzp/CMs0CqeuzrxSRpbOKfdCkiMTS1VBQ41uxMyQR2qbrXiiwYN3ACh1FDmsdK2Eu4J6Tlo31dYVtCY88h5ELZIJJ+IRMzBHfyJINrigNkt5VsRiub9nXICdsYyVd2NcVvA3ScE5t2rb5JuEeyZnAhmLt9NK63vX1O5Pe8XaPSuGq1uTrfUgMEp9EJ+CQvr+BJ/AAKvAcCiAR+bf9CjAAluzmdX4AEIIAAAAASUVORK5CYII=">

As @mikekaganski already showed it would be possible to integrate the pictures. It is usually not done often, because it would increase the time to load the file (and you loose the easy access to your pictures, as regular tools don’t access images inside .html or .odt or inside databases).
.
Also integration of images in the file is a real problem with your

It is possible in .html but readability is not good. Some editors have “folding”. But if you don’t wish to develop something yourself you are off the beaten track…
