@jhpoletti please provide greater detail. There are a lot of different format files produced by Lotus over the years. Which particular type of file and format (i.e., Lotus product, version, and file extension) are you referring to? If LO can process the file type in question then a direct conversion (Lotus → ODS) should be possible. Are you experiencing problems while attempting to do this? If yes, please provide details. Thanks.
@oweng jhpoletti is probably referring to Lotus 123 files (Excel). In my experience the answer is NO. Refer to the following bugs 55789, 55222, 55066.
@horst, thanks for the clarification. I think the first bug is fdo#55786 rather than 55789. With regards to the attachments for fdo#55786, there does not appear to be a universal-content.wk3 file - the link to this file appears to download universal-content.FM3 (again). Is that right?
@oweng, sorry about the typo it is fdo#55786. The .FM3 and .WK3 belong together and somstimes only one is needed. They have a bit weird behavior.
