Libre 7.17 Download Has Prevented Internet Use

Run an anti-virus check in case you did actually download from elsewhere. If you use Windows Defender, click the conveniently located Start menu > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security > Virus and Threat Protection > Quick Scan otherwise do a scan from your normal anti-virus. It will probably come back clean.

I suspect it is security setting(s) somewhere. Are you using Windows Defender or have you installed another anti-virus?

Thank you very much @EarnestAl , I really appreciate your help and reply very much.

I don’t know if I have Windows Defender, our computer pro set up our computer and its systems and software. How can I find out now by myself if I have Defender? I can’t ask my computer pro til he returns in a week.

Click Start menu > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security > Apps & Browser control and under Who’s protecting me? click on link Manage providers. In the new window under Anti-virus, it should say what anti-virus you are using.

BTW you can probably use Edge browser as Microsoft ensures its own applications aren’t blocked.

I’ve looked a bit at Brave browser today. If I blocked all ads in Firefox, then on many sites I would not be able to access any content, although I don’t think that happens on LibreOffice.org. Potentially, your AV might have blocked Brave browser.

Thank you again very much, Earnest. This makes sense to me, I need to either change my protection or brave

Thank you so much, will try this soon as I can given my schedule and let you know.

I would like to try Edge but at the moment I can’t download it bec I can’t get on the internet.

Earnest, thank you for your patience, I went through all your steps listed and found the following:

Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned on.

Windows Firewall is turned off.

Web Protection: no providers

hyperlink: Find security app’s in Microsoft store

What do you recommend I do now?

Thank you again so much,

Einar

I just ran the scan, result: no threats found, as you thought it would show.

Please advise, based on this and my other related email.

Thanks Earnest !

Edge is installed as part of Windows 10 updates, it replaces internet explorer. It has a blue green swirly wave icon on the task bar.

Unless you have a good reason, such as another provider, you should probably have Windows Firewall turned on. If you turned it off to allow a scanner to connect, you should make an exception for that in the firewall.

You can unblock programs in Windows Defender that you know to be safe. Go to Start menu > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection settings and under Potentially unwanted app blocking click on Protection History. Filter by blocked items, if you recognise a safe program there (e.g. soffice.bin), click the + in the sub window next to the name to unblock it. If you are not sure, don’t unblock.

OK thanks Earnest,

we get all updates so will check for Edge, I think I have it

will also follow your steps for firewall

will let you know

Thank you again

I moved Edge to task bar

following your most recent steps:

"Filter by blocked items is not a click. There is a box to its right titled ‘Filters’

this gives a scroll-down menu w 6 options:

Clear filters

Recommendations

Quarantined items

Cleared items

Blocked actions

Severity

I tried only ‘Recommendations.’ Clicking on that gave 3 options:

a) ‘Sign in with Microsoft for enhanced security and other benefits’ with a box to its right to click, titled ‘Actions’

b) ‘The setting to block potentially unwanted app’s i turned off. Your device may be vulnerable’ with a box to its right to click, titled 'Actions

c) ‘Set up OneDrive for file recovery options in case of ransomware attack’ with a box to its right to click, titled ‘Actions’

OK what’s next?

Thank you,

Einar

It doesn’t sound as if Defender is blocking access. Can you use Edge?

I opened Edge

browser window opened

with window / box with 2 options:

“Use Microsoft-recommended browser settings”

“Don’t update browser settings”

One of these must be clicked to allow a click on button below “Apply Settings”

I assume I should click on the first option but wanted to check w you

Thanks,

Einar

I would be inclined not to let Microsoft update the browser settings. It wants to make Edge the default browser and to change your home page to MSN or something horrible. You can always change the settings later.

Earnest,

It was like a miracle. I thought I was in the middle of a protracted process of ‘I didn’t know what,’ that was going to eventually result in being able to use the internet, because I didn’t understand what I was doing, the steps you were taking me through. I was just doing them. But when I clicked on ‘don’t update browser settings,’ then on ‘Apply Settings,’ all of a sudden, I had the internet. I just told my wife, we are amazed, and so grateful to you. We don’t know how to thank you Earnest. If you would accept anything, please let us know, send us your address, anything.

But we have another question, which is what we were trying to do in the first place by downloading Libre.

We strongly want to avoid the default indentation for numbers and bullet points in Microsoft Word and Google Drive and probably other Word alternatives, using my desktop and my wife’s PC laptop. But when we do any finds using the word ‘text,’ as in ‘text app,’ we get pages of results related to free downloads for app’s for cell phones, which is not what we are looking for.

As far as I can tell, we have two options:

a) Find an app that does not have default indents (like how emails work for example)

b) Find out how to remove the default indentation in Libre or Word or whatever text doc you would recommend (Word came free with our computer).

I would prefer no default indent, but use of most other html functionality, pretty much like using email.

What app would you recommend to provide this?

Again thank you so much,

Einar and Mary Cathryn

I don’t use Word anymore unless I am collaborating so I am a bit rusty on detail. If you right click on a bulleted or numbered list, one of the items in the context menu is Decrease Indent. If you click that your whole indented list will align to the left margin.

Is Microsoft Office licensed included with your computer? A trial version for a month? or the computer included a one year subscription? If one of the last 2 then consider LibreOffice as a replacement when they expire or before.

I don’t think that your downloading and installation of LibreOffice had anything to do with Brave browser and Chrome browser failing. Maybe the Chrome update from 2021-11-03 was pushed through to Brave browser (based on Chrome) on the day it failed?

I think that Writer is easier to use and more able to do complex tasks than Word. It is possible to change the style of bulleted and numbered lists and save the template as default but a novice would need assistance. I am in favour of downloading LibreOffice 7.1.7 and installing it but there is a learning curve to any new software. The Getting Started Guide is a good place to find information as is the Writer Guide, both free downloads on documentation page

Thanks Earnest,

I have Microsoft Office permanently installed on my desktop, I guess it came with the computer. The computer was used, not new, and someone had purchased Office and installed it. But I assume Office would also have a default indent. I really appreciate knowing about the right clicking in Word, but right clicking on a list every time I make one is what I’d like to avoid. I assume Office and Libre would both have default indent. I want an app that has no default indent at all and am willing to take the time to learn how to use it. My needs are not sophisticated, I’m not writing a book (right now). Only making doc’s, mostly for myself to store and refer to.

I still cannot use Brave Browser at all, it is in the same state as before, can’t get on internet, says enable java script, but can’t do that.

I will look into Writer - thank you,

Einar

Maybe this can help:

(In case all scripts were blocked…)

But as you had told chrome is also not working fir you, there seems to be another problem.

Now I can get Chrome and Brave beta, but not regular / old Brave. But when I go to either old Brave, or Brave Beta, and click on Settings, I don’t get Brave settings, I get a Dell setting page, my computer is Dell. On the Dell Settings page, there is no “Shields” to click to disable Brave shield.
