Libre Office (5.4.5.1) stopped opening files, so decided it probably needed updating. Tried this several times but each time it said process had been interrupted and come back later. Eventually I find the repair tool provided by Libre Office and half way through the same thing happens. Removal also gets interrupted. What can I do?

Stopped opening files? Not read-only? Sounds like your 3rd party anti virus is blocking LO from accessing the hard drive.
Turn AV off during installation, then under file access or anti ransomware settings allow soffice.bin so LibreOffice is no longer blocked from opening files.
