libre office makes my computer run really slow. there must be some extra stuff turned on. what should i turn off?

You have choosen tag “base”. This is for the database component of LibreOffice.
LibreOffice 6.4.7.2 is very old. LO 7.6.2.1 is current version at this moment.
Which system and hardware do you use?
Mine here: OpenSUSE 15.4 64bit rpm Linux, pc with 16 GB Ram and SSD. Might be this is the reason I don’t find anything “slow” here.
Do you have enough free space on your computer, 20%, or in swap file?
Do you have sufficient RAM? See minimum requirements at LibreOffice.org
A spinning hard disc will take longer for LibreOffice to start but should be fast enough once loaded unless you have insufficient RAM.
In which component do you find the slow down? If in Calc make sure that Optimal Row Height isn’t set.
From my experience, 6.4.7.2 is not slower than more recent versions.
You really haven’t sufficient information, please add more.
