libre office is super slow and won't read certain .odt files

I just installed the latest version of Libre Office and haw been having a hard time with it since. I’m operating it on a 2012 macbook air running OSX El Capitan 10.11.6.
It’s very often super slow and now I can’t open an .odt file.
I’m starting to regret the update. I have been using libre office for years now and have never had any problem like this.
