It was working and I selected all in the column containing mixed calculation and manually entered text and paste special as text. Now ‘RIGHT’ doesn’t work. Calculation fields work, but RIGHT doesn’t. The column is formatted as General. =“anther column” works. It was working an hour ago and now it doesn’t in any column. Any ideas of what happened?
I might add, only RIGHT doesn’t work. LEFT works, as does SUBSTITUTE). Tried Opebn Office, that doesn’t work either. This is a kerfufle.
Well problem is solved because of an idiot user (me) forgetting there are packed spaces in the original field. So LO was returning spaces. This is a hangover from the original source file. The spaces get stripped out in R after a join. I’ll leave this here in case somebody else happens to make the same mistake. Or else if a mod wants to delete it, pls do so. Thanks.

-3- Based on what is given I cannot reasionably answer. The mention of OpenOffice is either a joke or may give a hint, however: Did you “format” the cells where formulas don’t work as expcted in the section ‘Numbers’ as “Text” (format code @). Cells treated this way take everything entered as a literal text, and a formula can only be recognized as one and work then if it NOT is taken as literal Text.
-4- We would know whether this guess is correct if you had reported wjhat you SEE in the cell where a formula didn’t work.
