Libre Office Writer 7.6 wraps some text in square brackets, Why? I need this to stop

I have text in a file. I select the text and copy it for other purposes. I return to the file and the text has shaded square brackets surrounding it. This keeps happening every time I focus on the Libre Office .odt file. The text now has lots of brackets around it.

How do I stop this. How do I turn this thing off? What is it called? Previous versions of Libre Office never did this.

Image of the issue is attached.

Working on a Linux OS.

Your screenshot does not tell much about what’s inside your document. From guess work, I assume you have bookmarks, index entries or other annotations spread over your document. LO 7.6 is much richer in formatting feedback than previous releases. Without sample file, it is difficult to tell exactly which annotation is there.

Have a look at the Navigator side pane which lists all “additions” to text.

If my guess is right, these brackets are harmless (they don’t print): they just report behind-the-scene tags. If these result from additions of yours (meaning, you leave them in place because they have some importance for you), you can “tidy up” the display by playing with various parameters in menu View. IMHO, have a try with Field Shadings and Formatting Marks (though the latter does not seem to ba enabled). For better diagnostic attach a sample file.

Hi. Thanks for the feedback . There is no annotations turned on on this file. It’s a text only file.

The issue is I don’t want to see these square brackets and need to remove them from the text, but they’re not part of the text; they have NO IMPORTANCE to me, and didn’t exist until a few minutes ago. They seem to auto generate and “stack”, they also remain when closing and reopening the file.

I will check the annotations menu field and feed back. Thanks.

Thanks

EDIT: After exploring the navigation pane I can see these are all bookmarks. There are lots of unintentional bookmarks on the document. I wonder if there’s a way of disabling bookmarking?

These unintended bookmarks depend on the source of the copy/paste operation. Copying from web sites is known to create such artefacts and other formatting “surprises”. Word also has its own idiosyncrasies because DOCX and ODF have no one-to-one mapping. If you want a better adapted suggestion, attach a sample file. Replace sensitive information by “neutral” data or private mail me.

These rectangular braces are formatting aids that indicate a bookmark. In “Tools” - “Options” - LibreOffice Writer - Formatting aids, you can turn displaying these on or off.

To turn off shaded brackets go to View and uncheck Field Shadings.
