libreoffice 4.4 will not open after selecting LibreOffice icon.

A second icon is on the desktop. Selecting it provides the page
that normally allows file access. Selecting a file from the list results in a delay
but the file is not opened.

What is the target of the 2 icons? Does the other icon work? Can you open LO files directly?
