LibreOffice does not start on MacOS Catalina

I upgraded to the MacOS 10.15 Catalina. It is out of beta and is now a public release.

When I try to run LibreOffice I get this error message:
“LibreOffice.app” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.

macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware.

Possibly helpful information:

Are there any plans to fix this?

Will 6.2.8 work on mac with Catalina?

I am also unable to use Libreoffice since upgrading to the Catalina OS The following is the exact wording of a screen shot of the message received: “LibreOffice” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact developer for more information. I am now at a complete loss as to what office based software I can use as there also appears to be similar issues with MS Office Any help will also be appreciated

I was able to open 6.3.2 by going to security and privacy on imac and allowing system to open.

Hello

  1. No - there are no plans as long as there is no bug report at Bugzilla.
  2. Not sure whether it is a LibreOffice issue but with the security database of your MacOS (or a new feature from Apple to keep alien applications apart from their OS; sorry a bit tendencious)
  3. Use at your own risk: sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/LibreOffice.app (this disables the security check for LibreOffice)

Just for my curiosity: Did you install LibreOffice as Administrator (root) and now you are trying to start as a non-privileged user?

No, I installed it as a non-privileged user and am running it as the same user.

The bug dates back to 2019-07-15 when Catalina was in beta. I have added a comment to say that the issue still exists with the public release of Catalina.

I hope it will get some attention. Bypassing the security checks seems like a bad idea.

I’ve also just hit this issue after upgrading to Catalina on my Mac, and I get the same message as “Scooby 1298”.
Disabling the security check did work, but I’m not keen on using that method as a long term solution.

Option 3) for sure is not meant as a permanent solution (and I just mentioned for those urgently requiring a temp. solution. I wouldn’t feel comformatable with that myself). But it seems to me obvious that Apple changed something in Catalina - no one mentioned that he/she re-installed LO) and I cannot see that this implies a sec hole (story may be different on updates of LO). I got no Mac OS X, but there seems also to be some setting in Mac OS X’s security preferences (as per internet search).

The bug mentioned by @railmeat mentions a way to launch apps:

… users may run LibreOffice on 10.15 by right-clicking the app icon and choosing “Open” (the classic way to bypass Gatekeeper in macOS) …

That was about the beta version of Catalina. Is that also true now?

I had the Same problem on MacBook Mojave version, I used the following command and it work:

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/LibreOffice.app

I too hit the same issue – I was unable to open Libreoffice since upgrading to the Catalina OS. I got the same message: “LibreOffice can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.”

UPDATE: Later today, I tried a different method to open LibreOffice and it worked perfectly… just hold the Control Key down then you click on the app to open it, and click on OK to acknowledge you accept responsibility for opening an app that the OS cannot identify. LibreOffice then opens normally from that point on. This is consistent with Apple’s security measures to help users avoid mistakes when installing software that is NOT recognizes by the OS as “safe” and “approved”.

Which question do you answer here? Is it really so hard to understand that this site requires answers to answer a question and not to post any “me too’s”?. This site also provides temporary solutions, if you only would put “Catalina” into the search box. More sadly - the workaround below is given in my answer! (see item 3.) Please, please delete this answer.

I would suggest to Opaque that, since you don’t understand the current Mac OS, the fact that it has been released and have no experience with this issue, yours are the answers that should “please, please, please” be deleted.

What you don’t see here is that this poster has completely changed the text from the original post.
