LibreOffice Writer Footnote Indention

Hi,

I have recently started using LibreOffice Writer as an alternative to MS Word, which I have been using as the main Word processor.

I encountered one issue: The second line of every footnote that I add in the Writer would automatically indent, and I find no way to modify it.

Even after having saved the document and reopening it using MS Word, it still shows indented.

How do I fix it, so that it would not automatically indent as in MS Word?

To get the best help, mention OS name, exact LO version (not “latest” but something like 24.2.6.2 – see Help>About LO) and save format (docx vs.odt). The latter is the most important. Since DOCX and ODF (the LO standard) are based on different principles, conversion between format is always approximative.

Writer relies heavily on the notion of styles (I recommend you read the Writer Guide for an introduction to styles). A footnote is by default formatted by paragraph style Footnote where indentation is configured. You can customise this style to fit your needs (once you have read the appropriate chapter in the Guide). BUT, you’ll get stable, predictable and reliable results only if you savice in native format, i.e. .odt.

Writer use styles, as for the footnote there is a style with than name (footnote).
You must adjus the indents & spacing of the style.

OS: Windows 11
LO version: 25.8.1.1

I chose to save it as docx.

Hi, bantoniof,

Yes, I was trying to fix the issue through Indents and Spacing.

But the first time I tried to no avail; this time, it worked.

Thank you.

The best option to use LibreOffice is to edit and save the files in its native format (OpenDocument, .odt extension for Writer) and work with styles.

  • If you really need the files in another format, save it in that format when you finish your work.

It is always advisable to read the manual:

The Gettingstart guide has a chapter dedicated to Writer
And the Writer guide is more complete.
