Linking text boxes in Writer

Hi, I have recently moved from Microsoft Publisher in Windows to Apple iMac and trying to replicate my Publisher workflow using Libre Office. I’m struggling to link text boxes so that text will flow from one to another when the first text box is full. Currently the text box just keeps expanding and then disappearing off the bottom of the page. I’m using the most up to date version of Libre Office for Feb 2025 (24.8.4.2). I can include the ‘Link Frames’ icons in the tool bar, but they don’t appear to be doing anything or are simply not activated. Could anyone assist in resolving this frustrating issue please? Many thanks. Paul.

You cannot link or concatenate text fields with each other.

Use frames instead.

Page layout with frames chained

English documentation

Publisher is a desktop publishing (DTP) application where you create pages you fill with “objects”. LO Writer on the contrary is an application where you manage a text flow. Pages are automatically allocated to account for text size.

Philosophy is radically different between the two approaches, DTP vs. flow management.

To some extent, you can forward your workflow from Publisher to Writer but you’ll meet many limitations.

If your job is really DTP-oriented, I suggest you install Scribus, a FOSS DTP appl. Otherwise, in the case of a continuous flow of text across pages, use Writer in the “normal” way and learn how to format and layout with styles.

Many thanks,

That has helped to resolve the issue. Inserting a frame rather than a text box works. Thank you.

With every blessing.
