List bullets not formatted equally and off margins

typically when you:

  1. copy and paste an html page onto an odt document
  2. after you “clear the formatting” of the page to make it more to your liking by going Control-M or using the upper left formatting selection box

list bullets, as shown on the picture bellow, appear:
a) in differing sizes
b) off the page margin

Why does that happen and how can you fix that?
As in those old computer manuals, how can you simply use “space” + “*”+ “space” for list bullets?

Hi
Last question first, how to create a bulleted list if a line starts with a hyphen (-), a plus sign (+), or an asterisk (*), followed by a space, and text?
Click Tools > Autocorrect > AutoCorrect Options* and select the Options tab. Tick the box Bulleted and numbered lists. Bullet symbol. The Help button has a bit more info including the sequence for numbering.

For your existing list, you will have to change the style of the the bulleted list and paragraph.
Select your bulleted paragraphs

  • Open the Styles pane (the highlighted A with a paintbrush icon) on the right of your screenshot.
  • Select the Paragraph Styles icon (first on left of top row above styles pane) and double-click List from the selection in the pane. That should sort out the negative alignment.
  • Select List Styles from the row of icons at the top of the Styles pane (5th from left)
  • Double-click No List then double-click Bullets •
Your list should become one list with all the same style of bullet.

You might have to right-click Bullets • and select Modify to change the bullet size, position, etc. After that you can apply the same Bullet and List style to further lists in the document by selecting the paragraphs and double-clicking the appropriate styles

“Select the Paragraph Styles icon (first on left of top row above styles pane)” …
“on a clear sky in the morning look at the sun. that is East”
using your words I found a better explanation here:
Chapter 8 Introduction to Styles
but I still could not have my cake and eat it the way I wanted.

I don’t have your text in front of me so I have to guess what you have in your document and I assume you have kept default settings such as Tooltips, etc.
Select your list and double-click Bullets style

I presume that the AutoCorrect setting was OK?

Works for me

@lbrtchx: please attach the file corresponding to the screenshot so that we can have a look at the exact formatting inherited from HTML. There are often “glitches” due to conversion attempts. Also there may be lurking direct formatting, some of which may also be inherited from HTML.

Just a note that the two things do a different job.
