Thats why I had to erase it and download LO 5.3.7.

I’m using 5.4.4 for a while now. No issues of the kind.
I suppose you are talking of the cell grid lines inCalc sheets, but I do not understand what background color you expect or what the issue is insofar.
Generally an upgrade install accepts the user profile of the previous version. This should insure that your old settings still apply. You may nonetheless try a reset of the user profile as dscribed here.
Hopefully you know that a downgrade requires a prior complete uninstall of the younger version.
