LO Writer ignoring the specified default save directory

I have my default documents diirectory set in Tools>Options>LibreOffice>Paths. The directory exists and LO can see it, but it does not save there unless I navigate to that directory. Itr defaults instead to saving to the last used directory. Is there anyway to correct this?

Version: 7.5.4.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 36ccfdc35048b057fd9854c757a8b67ec53977b6
CPU threads: 4; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19045; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: en-NZ (en_NZ); UI: en-GB
Calc: CL threaded

Personally, I like last used directory as I typically work near the same directory; when I have my laptop away from the network it defaults to the set path which works for me. I don’t see how to change the behaviour in LO.

I can see it could be a problem for others. There are a couple of possible workarounds:

  • You might be able to do this in Windows 10, I can’t remember now. I am on Windows 11 and I can pin directories to the Quick Access by opening File Explorer, right-clicking on my desired target folder and selecting Pin to Quick Access
  • You could use the LibreOffice dialogue (click Tools > Options > General > Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes) in which you can add folders to the Places pane which gives you an immediate shortcut.

It’s a minor nuisance, nothing more. My point is that this behaviopur seems like a bu: Why allow the user to set a default directory in LO if that setting is then consistently ignored by LO?

An earlier version of LibreOffice had that but it was modified to current behaviour. See this bug report, Comment 3 suggests a user control to choose last used folder or default, but no mention of it further down.
Bug 126665 - [RFE] remember location where last file was saved - across LO modules
Cheers, Al

Again, this means it is a bug. If the option is no longer available in the latest versions, it should not be offered in the UI.

In that case you should file a report, How to Report Bugs in LibreOffice - The Document Foundation Wiki

Thanks. I have PLENTY of experience in filing bug reports - I use Base, the most neglected and therefore buggy LO component by far, filing bug reports with LO for Base is pretty much the dictionary definition of “pointless exercise in wishful thinking” . Disappointing that the same low standards of attention to UI/UX persist ieven in Writer

The comments in the bug report have differing opinions. The point of that bug report was for LO to use last folder (if last folder isn’t available then the default will be used). Just because it is not what you require, doesn’t mean it is “low standards”.

I’m beginning to wonder if you are deliberately failing to understand me. I have no problem with the default behaviour being “save to last directory used”.

My point, stated repeatedly and with clarity, is that LO offers the option to CHANGE that behaviour, but the offer is null and empty, pointless because it does absolutely nothing. The UI should not offer an option that does not actually exist. THAT is the bug, not the save behaviour.

It does default to chosen directory after major Windows upgrade or disconnecting, so it works. The current behaviour works better for me. It doesn’t work for you so you need to file the bug report.
